World of bowls mourns Linda Brennan

Bowls Scotland is saddened to announce the passing of Linda Brennan on Friday 26th January. Linda was a long-time Scottish internationalist and the proprietor of David Gourlay Bowls.

On and off the green, Linda was known throughout bowls in Scotland and around the world for her humour, warmth and passion for the sport, and her contribution to bowls at all levels is incalculable.

Linda was a member of Blantyre BC and Glasgow Indoor BC, and represented Scotland at international level from 1995 to 2009, including at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Linda’s skill, knowledge and dedication to the sport were highly regarded by Bowls Scotland, and she was about to be announced as Scotland assistant team manager for the BIWBC Internationals in Belfast in June.

David Gourlay, Scotland high performance coach, paid tribute.

“I had the pleasure of knowing Linda for over 30 years in a bowling capacity but I was also very lucky to call her a true friend. Linda had this amazing ability to leave an unforgettable memory on everyone she met and would always be there for you. She was one of the biggest characters in Scottish bowling and will be sadly missed.

“Apart from Linda’s unique personality, we must remember that she was a very accomplished bowler, having represented Scotland at the highest level, and her passion for the sport she loved was incredible.”

Chair of Bowls Scotland, Sue Beatt, said: “In every conversation with Linda, her passion for the sport shone through. She was a huge advocate of sustaining and modernising the game and had loads of ideas which, typical of Linda, she delivered at 90 miles an hour.

“On a personal level, five minutes in her company had you laughing and uplifted. She was an irrepressible and irreplaceable force, and her absence will be keenly felt throughout the bowls community, not just in Scotland, but around the world.”

The funeral will take place on Monday 12th February at Winchburgh Parish Church, Millgate, Winchburgh, Broxburn, West Lothian, at 1pm. It is a small venue, but friends and colleagues of Linda are welcome to join those who knew and loved her to celebrate her life.

The staff and directors of Bowls Scotland send their condolences to Gillian, family, friends and club mates of Linda.
