2025 Hong Kong Classic - Day Three Report

The 2025 Hong Kong Classic got underway over the weekend with both the men’s and women’s singles events reaching their conclusion yesterday.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t to be any silverware for Scotland’s four representatives, however, they can certainly take positives going into this week’s men’s and women’s pairs events. Gary Prunty won three matches in the men’s singles but was eventually eliminated by Wales’ two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Daniel Salmon at the quarter final stage. Darren Gualtieri and Alison Lamont picked up victories in their opening two singles contests before being defeated by New Zealand’s Aiden Takarua and Esme Kruger of South Africa respectively. Jess Weir also began her campaign with a win but was sadly beaten by Zoe Minish from Ireland in the second round.

Today saw the start of both the men’s and women’s pairs disciplines with Scotland competing in two rounds of group matches in both events throughout the day. In the men’s pairs, Darren Gualtieri and Gary Prunty recorded back-to-back victories over HKCC and KCC. The Scots face USA, New Zealand and China tomorrow, and will be hoping to build on their positive start to the competition.

Having an equally impressive day, Jess Weir and Alison Lamont also notched up two wins of their own against Ireland and Canada. Tomorrow’s fixtures see Jess and Alison take on KCC, STSA and ILBC.
