Birmingham 2022 - 1 year to go!
There is now exactly one year remaining until the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham get underway.
Scotland’s lawn bowlers will take to the greens at Royal Leamington Spa looking to secure medal success and create some more iconic moments for our sports show piece event. To mark this occasion, we caught up with Scotland’s Lawn Bowls Team Manager for Birmingham 2022, Billy Mellors.
With just 365 days to go, Billy said: “Bowls Scotland’s preparations are well under way for Birmingham 2022 and our players have already attended a selection weekend. We have already faced Ireland at Northfield and this weekend we travel to Leamington Spa for a Home Nations event.
“It’s not taken our players long to get going as the standard of play at the first squad weekend was incredible, especially considering their long layoff from bowling. Our focus is then on more selection weekends and a final Home Nations event at Northfield in September before the selection panel have the difficult task of selecting a team for the Commonwealth Games.
“As Team Manager, I am ecstatic with the squad selected and considering the restrictions placed upon us we have a schedule of events that give the players an opportunity to meet the selection criteria and catch the selectors eye. Our Head Coach, David Gourlay MBE, and Para Bowls Co-Ordinators, Bob Christie, have assembled support coaches with significant experience to assist our talented pool of players which will ensure we are better prepared than ever before. I know we will have the strongest team ever for Birmingham 2022 and I can’t wait for all our bowlers to hit the Victoria Park greens in Leamington Spa next summer.
“Keep an on eye on Bowls Scotland’s social media channels leading up to Birmingham 2022 to get behind the team. Tickets will be released at the beginning of September, so why not follow the team from the stands at Leamington and make it a home from home Commonwealth Games for our players!”
