Scotland win Women's & Overall Series at 2023 Junior Internationals

After a weekend full of challenging weather, rain delays and amazing bowls, Scotland were crowned champions of the Women’s Series and Overall Series at the 2023 Junior Internationals.

The Scots kicked off their campaign with mixed results against England on Saturday morning as the Men’s team secured a 5-shot victory over their arch-rivals after leading for the majority of the contest. Meanwhile, our Women’s team suffered a 49-63 defeat to start their Series off which also resulted in Scotland losing the Overall scoreline to England.

Saturday afternoon brought the challenge of facing hosts Wales on their home greens at Llandrindod Wells. After only being able to complete a few ends, play was suspended for the rest of the day due to inclement weather. Left with the unusual scenario of having to complete two games on Sunday morning, it was agreed by all four countries that these two matches would be completed in a shortened format of 13 ends.

Day two saw play resume at 8.30am as Scotland’s match with Wales was finally brought to a conclusion. Our Women’s team were undefeated across all three of their rinks and managed to claim a 15-shot victory. Unfortunately, our Men’s team couldn’t emulate this result and lost out 28-40 to Wales, who eventually went on to win the Men’s Series as they won all three of their respective matches.

To round off the Series, Scotland faced Ireland with all three trophies still well in the balance at this stage. Both sides required victories and results to go in their favour if they were to be successful come the end of each match.

Despite the short and sharp format, both Scottish teams got the better of their Irish opponents in comfortable fashion. In the Women’s Series there was last end drama between England and Wales which resulted in that game finishing in a draw and Scotland being crowned champions of both the Women’s and Overall Series.

Congratulations to all the Scottish players, coaches and support staff on an excellent weekend and winning two of the three events on offer. A huge thank you to Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club for their hospitality once again.
