Fleming takes bronze at World Cup
John Fleming has taken bronze at the World Bowls World Cup in Warilla, NSW, Australia after eight days of tough competition and excellent performances for both him and his Scotland team-mate Carla Banks.
Fleming had a hard-fought semi-final against eventual gold medallist Gary Kelly of Ireland, with the Irish player winning 6-5 11-4.
Over the tournament, Fleming won eight of his eleven matches in the rounds stage before progressing to the quarter-finals, where he had a brilliant 7-6 9-4 win against the fast rising home favourite Aaron Teys.
Banks won six of her nine early rounds to make the quarter-finals, where she ran defending champion Lucy Beere of Guernsey close in the first set before eventually being beaten 10-9 11-1.
Head coach David Gourlay is delighted with his players' performances.
"Both Carla and John should be super proud of their achievements at the World Cup," he said. "Up against quality opposition, they both demonstrated that they have what it takes to compete on the international stage, and the experiences they have gained this week will assist as they continue to develop into rising stars of the future."
