Mark O'Hagan wins bronze medal at World Champion of Champions
Congratulations to Mark O’Hagan for winning a bronze medal in the men’s singles at the World Champion of Champions at Adelaide BC, Australia.
Mark brilliantly won 10 out of his 11 group games to finish top of the section and advance straight through to the semi-finals. This included wins against England, Malaysia and New Zealand with Mark’s only loss being against the Isle of Man in his very first game.
In the semi-final, Mark took on Tony Cheung from Hong Kong China and despite playing well he was unfortunately beaten in straight sets 10-4 & 10-8.
Laura Welsh competed in the women’s singles over the week and played well and was unlucky not to qualify for the knockout stages.
The British Isles women’s singles champion won her first four games in the group but then went on a losing streak of three games against Wales, USA and New Zealand – all of which she was unfortunate to lose on 3 end tie-breaks.
In her last group game, Laura was still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages, but she had to beat South African Esme Kruger in straight sets. Laura managed to clinch the first set but eventually lost the second set to end her hopes of qualifying from the section.
Well done to both players on a brilliant tournament and doing Scotland proud!
