Scotland v Wales - Day Two Report

After an intense showdown at Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club this morning, Scotland managed to win their test series against Wales by a single shot, win both nations tied on 52 points each.

Session One

Despite starting strongly, both Scottish men’s singles players suffered narrow defeats. Robert Lenza led in the early stages but couldn’t keep his momentum going, eventually losing out 15-21 to Andrew Fleming. Andrew Dunnett was the victim of a late fightback from Carl Wood as he went down 20-21 in a high-quality contest.

Our women’s singles players were also beaten by fine margins. Carla Banks led for the majority of her game against Caroline Taylor but lost out at the last end 18-19 as the match ran over the allocated time limit. Lorna Cameron put up a brilliant fight to Sara Nicholls, however sadly came up short with a 18-21 defeat.

Both para pairs teams ended their test series with loses too. Steve Key and Glen Livingston were beaten 7-22 by a strong performance from Paul Brown and Chris Spriggs in the physically disabled pairs. There was never much in the visually impaired pairs game between Melanie Inness and Gareth Marshall against Julie Thomas and Steffan James, with the Welsh duo prevailing victorious 11-13 at the last end.

Scotland’s fightback began in the para physically disabled and visually impaired triples. The trio of Mary Stevenson, Gary Hinks and Andrew Shea won a tight affair 16-12 over Gareth Rowe, Robert Sawyers and Robbie Byrne. Meanwhile, Mary Wilson, Lee Mitchell and Robert Barr were in fine form to dispatch of Sue Jones, Matthew Thorne and Pheobe Hallet 19-8.

The spoils were shared in the men’s fours with both nations securing a win each. Allan Ramsay, Paul Innes, Colin Bonner and Gary Prunty combined well together to record a commanding 22-4 win over John Roberts, Steve Allen, Daniel Salmon and Mark Harding. Calum Williamson, Craig Adrain, Andrew Thomson and Greg Logan fell behind in the early stages of their match, finishing 8-21 behind in the end against Martin Clarke-Squires, Sam Roff, Owain Dando and Danny Davies Jnr.

Both women’s fours team rounded off their weekend with maximum points, securing the points and shots Scotland required to win the two-day test series. Jaclyn Neil, Wendy Grant, Sarah Jane Ewing and Alison Lamont got the better of Amy Williams, Jasmine Staton, Alis Butten and Ysie White 21-13. The Scottish quartet of Dawn Anderson, Lawra Cox, Rebecca Houston and Gail Notman took a well-earned 18-6 victory over Emma Gittins, Jodie McCarthy, Lauren Gowen and Laura Daniels.

Congratulations to the full Scottish team and coaching staff on their triumph over Wales. We would also like to thank Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club for their hospitality and hosting the event.
