2024 Hong Kong Classic - Day Five Round Up
Day five was yet another fruitful day for the Scottish contingent at the Hong Kong Classic as there were three wins from today’s four matches for our Men’s and Women’s pairings.
In the Men’s Pairs, Darren Gualtieri and Iain McLean’s matches were moved to be played indoor at Hong Kong Football Club due to adverse weather conditions. However, not even the change of playing surface could knock the Scots off their stride. The Scottish duo delivered the perfect day, chalking up two commanding 6-0 victories against ZGMBC and TMSA respectively. Darren and Iain have now won all seven of their sectional games so far and currently sit in first place in Group A.
Our Women’s Pairs of Dee Hoggan and Rachel Sinclair had to settle for one win and one defeat on day five. In their first match of the day, the Scottish pairing took on New Zealand’s Selina Goddard and Briar Atkinson and narrowly lost out in both sets 10-11 and 5-8. Now facing a hugely important game against England, Dee and Rachel dug deep to come from behind to clinch a crucial 4-2 victory. Despite currently sitting in 10th position in their section, the Scots are only eight points behind being in fourth place which would be enough to ensure their qualification to the knockout stages.
With four group games remaining for both pairings there is plenty still to play for. Tomorrow is a day of rest for all the competing nations before the action re-commences on Friday 15th November.
