2024 Hong Kong Classic - Day Two Round Up
The 2024 Hong Kong Classic got underway this weekend with both the Men’s and Women’s Singles events reaching their conclusion earlier today.
A huge congratulations to Iain McLean who came through six straight knockout games over the last two days to be crowned the Men’s Singles champion. Iain delivered a sensational performance in the final to defeat Australia’s Kyle Hansen 8-5 & 9-2. The Scot also claimed impressive wins against Cody Packer from Australia and Ireland’s Adam Rankin in the earlier rounds.
Iain now joins the illustrious company of George Adrain, Richard Corsie, Graham Robertson, George Sneddon, David Peacock and Robert Grant as the only Scottish players to have won the Men’s Singles at the Hong Kong Classic.
Scotland’s other Men’s Singles representative, Darren Gualtieri, lost out to Patrick Choi from HKFC on a tie break in the last 16 round. Before this, Darren secured wins against Eric Lam and Quenton Ip respectively.
In the Women’s Singles, results didn’t go in Scotland’s favour as both Dee Hoggan and Rachel Sinclair had to settle for first round defeats. Dee lost in straight sets to ELBC’s Winny Chai and Rachel agonisingly came up short against Danna Chiu from TMSA in a tie break.
Attention now turns to the Men’s and Women’s Pairs group stages getting underway on Monday 11th November. Darren Gualtieri and Iain McLean face a tough opening two fixtures as they take on Hong Kong A and Ireland. Hoping to defend the title they won in 2023, Dee Hoggan and Rachel Sinclair come up against two local pairings from SBSC and YDT to start off their Women’s Pairs campaign.
