2025 Hong Kong Classic - Day Seven Report
Hats off to Scotland’s Darren Gualtieri, Gary Prunty, Jess Weir and Alison Lamont on advancing to tomorrow’s men’s and women’s pairs finals at the Hong Kong Classic.
In the men’s pairs, Darren and Gary had already secured top spot going into their final group game. However, the Scottish duo were no doubt keen to maintain their 100% winning record and done so by recording a 4-2 victory over GLBC.
Moving onto the quarter final, the Scottish duo now took on the talented Welsh pairing of Daniel Salmon and Carl Wood. The first set was an extremely close encounter with Darren and Gary eventually doing enough to secure a 10-9 win in their favour. Using this momentum, the Scots moved through the gears in the second set to come out on top 10-4.
Next up for the Scottish pairing in the semi final was YDT’s Alex Lee and Gary Kwan. Scotland got the better of the opening exchanges and took the first set 11-3. YDT were far from finished though and showed strong resilience to bounce back and win the second set 7-11. The match now entered a three-end tie break with Darren and Gary managing to hold their nerve to get over the winning line 5-2.
Darren and Gary will face England’s Harry Goodwin and Dominic McVittie in tomorrow’s final at 1pm (5am GMT). The final will be live streamed on the Lawn Bowls Association of Hong Kong, China YouTube channel via the following link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-o-CFPHqNs
Meanwhile, in the women’s pairs, Jess Weir and Alison required two points from their final sectional match to book their place in the knockout stages. The Scots went on to secure their place in the quarter finals in style, coming out on top with a 6-0 victory over ZGMBC.
Advancing to the quarter final, Jess and Alison delivered an accomplished performance to get the better of USA’s Janice Bel and Anne Nunes 15-2 & 13-6. The Scottish pairing continued their form in the semi final, defeating India’s Reshma Kumari and Manu Kumari Pal in straight sets to clinch their place in the final.
