National Volunteer Award Profile - Tam Adams
The latest winner of the Bowls Scotland National Volunteer Awards is Tam Adams from Peterhead Bowling Club.
Tam was chosen as a National Volunteer Award winner for his outstanding contribution to the local community and being a positive role model to others, having spent the last 25 years maintaining the clubs’ grounds and flowerbeds to be in immaculate condition. At 92-years-old, Tam is the oldest recipient of our National Volunteer Awards to date.
A member of Peterhead Bowling Club since 1999, Tam keeps the clubs’ gardens in pristine condition every year, looking after all the flowerpots and hanging baskets with great passion and care. Both members and visitors of Peterhead Bowling Club appreciate and acknowledge the time and effort Tam dedicates to his trade, so much so that he was made an honorary member of the club in 2016.
Speaking on what Tam means to Peterhead Bowling Club, his nominator Stefan Girling Snr said: “When I joined the Peterhead Bowling Club in 2019 there was a number of hard-working volunteers. The one that inspired me the most was Tam because of his dedication and work rate at his age. He was an inspiration and has been over the last six years. His age has never affected his dedication to the club.”
“Tam has made a great difference to the bowling club. The garden and pots are always flourishing with colour and flowers. His cheery nature and stories over his life keep everybody going.
“Volunteers are the heart of any bowling club. Without volunteers the heart would stop beating.”
To Tam’s surprise, he was presented with his National Volunteer Award at Peterhead Bowling Club at the end of the 2025 season, surrounded by club committee members, fellow volunteers and friends.
When asked what it meant to be presented his award, Tam commented: “It was totally unexpected, I was surprised and overjoyed after my wonderful bowling journey.
“I love what I do around the club, getting to meet friends and hearing people’s wonderful comments about our gardens. I take great pleasure in looking after the gardens at the club, seeing the end results is what motivates me. It makes all the hard work, effort and my love of gardening worthwhile.”
Congratulations to Tam on behalf of everyone at Bowls Scotland for receiving his thoroughly deserved National Volunteer Award!
