2025 Podium Open 3-Bowl Pairs Results

The Podium Open 3-Bowl Pairs event was played to a conclusion on Sunday 11th May.

138 teams were competing throughout the country across four separate venues, with no less than 276 players showcasing their talents.

A full report from each of the seven separate playdowns can be found below.

Balgownie BC

The winners at Balgownie Bowling Club were the wife and husband pairing of Lisa Thomson and Andrew Thomson.

Lisa and Andrew maintained a 100% winning record throughout the whole competition, qualifying from Group A after beating Corey Cadger & Mark Thompson and Ben Ord & Greg Hodgens.

Winning their respective groups and completing the semi-final lineup was the teams of Kieran Alexander & Alan McDonald, Stuart Slessor & Colin Clark and Jason Banks & Kyle Ross.

In the semi-finals, Lisa and Andrew Thomson got the better of Kieran Alexander and Alan McDonald 9-6 in a hard-fought contest. Jason Banks and Kyle Ross won the second semi-final, defeating Stuart Slessor and Colin Clark 8-5 in another competitive match.

Despite some quality bowls from both teams, the final ended a relatively one-sided affair with Lisa and Andrew overcoming Jason and Kyle 14-4.

Cardonald BC A

The two pairings of Jessica Weir & Alison Lamont and John Fleming & Stewart McAlees won the Cardonald Bowling Club A qualifier.

Jessica and Alison qualified for the semi-finals by finishing top of Group A. Their only defeat in the group stage came against Darren Weir and Paul Foster MBE, a loss which they avenged later in the day in the semi-final. In the final, Jessica and Alison got the better of the home club team of Leah McCloy and David Elliot 9-8 in a nail-biting game.

John and Stewart secured first position in Group B to advance to the knockout phase, despite losing their opening game of the day against David Torlay and Thomas Kerr. The duo from Port Glasgow Bowling Club delivered two strong displays in the semi-final and final to dispatch of Craig McKellar & Kieran Reynolds and Megan Sproat & John Sproat respectively.

Cardonald BC B

Cardonald Bowling Club’s second qualifier was won by the two teams consisting of Jamie McCarry & David McCarry and Kevin Bain & Brian Bowers.

The son and father pairing of Jamie and David McCarry remained undefeated throughout the whole day, qualifying in top spot in Group D courtesy of their two wins and one draw. In the knockout games, Jamie and David ended the hopes of Sarah Campbell & Laura McCabe and Robbie Dunlop & Jamie Noon to book their places at the International Assessment Weekend.

Kevin and Brian’s two victories and one defeat in the group stages was enough for them to win Group B via their superior shot difference. The Hyndland Bowling Club duo proved to be too strong in the knockout phase as they saw off Claire McCurdie & Michael Keenan and Scott Speirs & Graeme Hume.

Grangemouth BC A

Grangemouth Bowling Club’s first qualifier was won by the two teams of Drew Murdoch & Ally McFarlane and Garry Brown & Ross Kinnell.

Drew and Ally boasted a 100% winning record throughout the full event, topping Group A having impressively only conceded four shots. Continuing their fine form, Drew and Ally defeated Blair Gourley & Ann Milton and Daniel Kirk & Peter Kirk in the knockout stages to secure their victory.

Garry and Ross also passed through the event undefeated, recording two victories and one draw to win Group D. In the knockout phase, Garry and Ross held their nerve to beat Mark Phillips & Stuart Inglis and Kenny Bald & Allan Ramsay.

Grangemouth BC B

The second playdown at Grangemouth Bowling Club was clinched by the pairings of Andy Greenwood & David Greenwood and Gary Prunty & Iain McLean.

Andy and David qualified for the semi-finals as one of the highest runners-up, following their two wins and one loss in Group B. Making the most of their opportunity, Andy and David dug deep to overcome Rhys Kidd & Gary Earl and Aaron Miller & Kieran Delaney in their semi-final and final.

Gary and Iain advanced their way through the competition with an unblemished record, winning all three of their sectional games in Group D. The Scottish internationalists then ended the hopes of Lyle Robertson & Daniel Martin and Martin Todd & Darren Couper in the knockout rounds.

Sighthill BC A

Michael McLean & Ewan Shearer and Daniel Gormley & Connor Milne prevailed from Sighthill Bowling Club’s first qualifier on Sunday.

Michael and Ewan advanced to the knockout stages courtesy of their highest runner-up spot in Group B, after losing to Frazer Muirhead & Gary Orr during sectional play. The West Lothian pairing went on to beat Logan Fraser & Astyn McKechnie and Dee Hoggan & Stuart Thomson in their knockout fixtures.

Daniel and Connor maintained a faultless record throughout the competition, winning all three of their sectional games in Group E. The Scottish internationalists then got the better of Daryl Dalglish & Kevin McDougall and West Lothian’s Frazer Muirhead & Gary Orr.

Sighthill BC B

The final qualifier of the day was won by the son and father pairing of James Dunnett & Andrew Dunnett and Scotland U25 internationalists Logan Kennedy & Charlie Mitchell.

James and Andrew were yet another pair to boast a 100% winning record throughout the whole event, topping Group A with some impressive results. They then defeated fellow son and father pairing Ruairidh Mann & Thomas Mann and Scottish para internationalists Mary Wilson & Pauline Wilson.

Topping Group E with three wins from three matches, Logan and Charlie produced several accomplished displays at the Sighthill event. In the knockout rounds, Logan and Charlie ousted John McDermott & Gavin Smith and Ann Muirhead & Greg Logan to advance to the International Assessment Weekend.

A huge thanks to all of yesterday’s host clubs, assessors, umpires and volunteers that helped make the Podium Open 3-Bowl Pairs event happen. This weekend sees the Podium Open Triples taking place on Saturday 17th May at Bainfield Bowling Club, Balgownie Bowling Club, Grangemouth Bowling Club and Ralston Bowling Club.
