2024 Hong Kong Classic - Day Eight Round Up
Congratulations to Darren Gualtieri and Iain McLean who defeated England’s Tom McGuinness and Harry Goodwin to win the Men’s Pairs at the 2024 Hong Kong Classic.
The first set’s scoreline swayed back and forth after some excellent bowls from all four players. Trailing 5-6 with three ends in the set remaining, Darren and Iain produced two brilliant back-to-back ends to pick up counts of three and four to give themselves a six-shot advantage going into the last end. With the English pairing chasing a maximum count of six, Scotland controlled the head and picked up one shot to clinch the set 13-6.
In the second set, the Scots took an early 6-2 lead after four ends and managed their advantage well to still be 9-6 ahead going into the last end. English skip Harry Goodwin did have an opportunity with his last bowl to remove Scotland’s shot bowl for the count of four he required to force the match into a tie break. Thankfully, from a Scottish perspective, he was marginally wide and trailed the jack for only one shot which saw the second set finish 9-7 and Scotland crowned champions.
Well done to Darren and Iain on their amazing performances over the last week to lift the title. A flawless event for Iain McLean who played outstanding to win gold in both the Men’s Singles and Pairs.
