Scotland continue to battle in British Bowls Internationals
Scotland enjoyed another busy day of British Bowls Internationals action at the National Centre for Bowling, Ayr, with both the Men’s and Women’s teams producing strong performances across Friday’s play.
The day started brightly for Scotland Men, who picked up a 10-4 victory over Wales in the morning session.
Gordon White, Liam Nicholson, John Fleming and Connor Milne got Scotland off to a strong start with an 18-10 win in the Fours, before Iain McLean defeated Carl Wood 21-18 in the Singles. Further Scottish points came from Robbie Cuthill, James Hogg, Colin Bonnar and Gary Prunty, who won 18-12, while Darren Gaultieri rounded off the session with a 21-12 Singles win over Mark Thomas.
Scotland Women faced a tough opening session against England, losing out 10-4 despite some positive performances across the green.
Erin Bedwell, Megan Sproat and Natalie McWilliams claimed an impressive 20-13 Triples win over Lauren Selway, Izzie White and Nicole Rogers, while Lorna Cameron and Gail Notman added a strong 22-12 Pairs victory against Laura Holden and Stef Branfield.
The Women responded brilliantly in the afternoon, bouncing back with a commanding 12-2 win over Jersey.
Dawn Anderson, Jess Weir and Ali Lamont opened the session with a 25-7 Triples victory, before Dee Hoggan and Stacey McDougall added a 22-10 Pairs win. Abbi Harris, Emma Blyth and Lynn Lees came through 19-14, while Bedwell, Sproat and McWilliams continued their excellent day with a 22-6 win.
Emma MacLeod and Rebecca Houston completed Scotland’s points in the session with a 20-13 Pairs victory, sealing a strong afternoon response from the Women’s team.
Scotland Men also returned to the green in the afternoon and continued their excellent day with another 10-4 win, this time against Ireland.
McLean carried his form into the second session with a 21-11 win over Stuart Bennett, while Gaultieri delivered a dominant 21-4 victory against Richie Leonard. Andy Dunnett also came through a close Singles contest, defeating Shane Leonard 21-19.
In the Fours, White, Nicholson, Fleming and Milne claimed their second win of the day, defeating Ryan McElroy, Sean Trainor, Jack Moffett and Mark Wilson 17-10.
After six sessions, Scotland Men sit second in the overall table on 38 points, six points behind leaders England. Scotland have also recorded the best shot difference in the Men’s competition so far, sitting at +79, and have played one session fewer than the other nations.
Scotland Women also sit second in their overall table on 37 points, with England leading on 56. Scotland have played one session fewer than the other nations, with Wales sitting close behind on 35 points and Ireland on 32.
Play continues on Saturday, with both Scotland teams back in action as the British Bowls Internationals continue in Ayr.
