2024 Youth Internationals - Day One Report

Scotland’s rising stars made a promising start to the 2024 Youth Internationals at Belmont Bowling Club in Belfast, claiming 39 out of a possible 48 points on offer during today’s play.

Keen to make a fast start, the young Scottish team kicked their series off in impressive fashion by recording an 8-4 victory over England in the first session. Commanding wins for the triples of Sarah Campbell, Leah McCloy & Charlie Mitchell and Frazer Lees, Emily Houston & Logan Fraser were enough to cancel out defeats for the teams skipped by Logan Kennedy and Kyle Logan respectively.

On to session two and the Scots kept up their early momentum to chalk up a dominant 12-0 win against Wales. Scotland secured comfortable wins in all four triples matches but it was the team of Sarah Campbell, Leah McCloy and Charlie Mitchell who notched up the highest winning margin with a 31-5 victory.

The penultimate session of the day was yet another strong showing for Scotland as they recorded a 10-2 win over Ireland. Sarah Campbell and Logan Kennedy led the way courtesy of a 23-6 win in their pairs contest. Both Scottish rinks also produced comfortable victories to ensure another strong haul of points. Unfortunately, Emily Houston and Logan Fraser suffered Scotland’s only defeat of the session at the hands of Isabel Ruby Nolan and Alex Jones.

In the fourth and final session of the day, Scotland took on Wales but this time in two pairs and two fours encounters. Building on their win against Ireland in the previous session, Sarah Campbell and Logan Kennedy yet again delivered another crucial victory. Emily Houston and Logan Fraser narrowly lost out to the talented pairing of Rhianna Thompson and Billy Flynn 15-22. In the fours, the rink of Sarah Roberts, Leah Hunter, Blair Gourley and Kyle Logan dominated from the off and finished up with a 31-10 win. Kayden Young, Amy Blyth, Leah McCloy and Charlie Mitchell had to settle for a draw in their match but a late comeback from the young Scots saw them secure a vital point which could be crucial in the overall standings at the conclusion of the event tomorrow afternoon.

Scotland currently sit in first place in the overall standings, five points ahead of England after day one. Another two sessions of play will be completed tomorrow to determine who will be crowned series winner for 2024. A further report will be provided after the conclusion of those matches.
