2025 World Cup - Day Three Report

Day three of the World Cup saw the men’s singles, women’s pairs and para men’s singles disciplines get underway as well as the para women’s singles group matches continuing. Team Scotland recorded a total of five wins from their 12 games across the men’s, women’s and para categories.

In the men’s singles, Paul Foster MBE came up against England’s Sam Tolchard in his first sectional match. The Scot got the better of the early exchanges, deservedly clinching the opening set 6-4. However, momentum began to swing in the Englishman’s favour with Sam taking the second set 1-11 and holding his nerve to also win the one end tie break. Next up for Paul was an equally challenging assignment against Ross Owen of Wales. The four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist battled his way throughout the game, but the Welshman’s consistency proved too much to overcome, with Ross eventually winning the contest 2-6 & 3-8.

Current World Indoor Open Singles champion Jason Banks also commenced his men’s singles campaign, notching up one victory from his two matches against England and Wales respectively. Jason came up against Jamie Walker from England in his opening encounter. Despite the Scot fighting hard, a couple of key conversion shots from the former World Indoor Open Singles winner were enough to secure a 5-7 & 4-6 win. Responding well from the defeat, Jason rounded off the day by picking up a crucial 2-1 victory against Wales’ Daniel Davies Jnr.

Sophie McGrouther and Caroline Brown made a promising start to the women’s pairs event, chalking up two wins from their opening three sectional games. The Scottish duo started the day strongly, notching up 1.5-0.5 sets wins against Ireland’s Chloe Wilson & Lara Reaney and Janice Bell & Anne Nunes from USA. In their last match of the day, Sophie and Caroline were beaten 2-4 & 1-6 by the talented English pairing of Emily Kernick and Katherine Rednall.

After qualifying for Saturday’s para mixed pairs final alongside Pauline Wilson yesterday, Garry Brown’s attention now shifted to competing in the para men’s singles. The Scot performed well in his opening two group matches but couldn’t quite get over the winning line, narrowly losing out to James Reynolds of Australia and Hong Kong China’s Wai-Sum Tong. Garry bounced back admirably in his final game of the day, producing a consistent display to defeat USA’s Khirmern Mohamed in straight sets.

Finally, Pauline Wilson completed her second and third group fixtures in the para women’s singles. In her first contest of the day, the reigning Bowls Scotland B6-B7-B8 Ladies Singles champion lost out 4-5 & 0-11 to an accomplished performance by Teri Blackbourn from New Zealand. Keen to get her qualification hopes back on track, Pauline showed her brilliance in her following game, overcoming Ireland’s Linda Walsh in straight sets.
