2025 World Bowls Champion of Champions - Day Five Report

Scotland’s Iain McLean has come away from the 2025 World Champion of Champions with a bronze medal. Well done to Iain on picking up a second medal at the World Champion of Champions, having previously won gold in the men’s singles in 2014.

The Scot lost out to the eventual winner, David Copeland from Ireland, in a brilliant semi final which could have gone either way.

In the first set, Iain trailed 0-4 after two ends but fought back well to salvage a 6-6 draw at the completion of the seven ends.

Using this momentum, Iain began to find greater consistency in the second set, racing into a commanding 7-2 lead after five ends. McLean continued to put his opponent under pressure in the final two ends of the match. Sadly, Ireland’s David Copeland produced some excellent conversion shots to pick up the five shots he required over the final two ends to force the match into a tie-break.

Iain took the opening end of the tie break to lead 1-0 but dropped a crucial count of three shots in the second end to trail 1-3 going into the last end. Chasing the match, Iain played a couple of conversion shots to create a chance of scoring the two shots he required to keep the game alive. Despite hitting the target, the result didn’t fall in Iain’s favour, with the contest going the way of the Irishman.

Congratulations to Iain on an excellent tournament, representing Scotland with pride and picking up another medal on the world stage.
