Celebrating Progress: The Next Step for Scotland’s Performance Pathway
Since the introduction of Bowls Scotland’s new Podium Pathway in 2024, significant progress has been made in developing a more transparent, accessible and inclusive route for athletes aspiring to represent Scotland.
The pathway was established to provide greater clarity around athlete identification, development and selection, while creating an environment in which more players can fulfil their potential. Over the past two years, the pathway has continued to evolve, with increased support for athletes and a stronger focus on longer term development.
The introduction of Performance Pathway Days brings athletes and coaches together more regularly within structured training environments. These sessions have strengthened relationships across the programme, fostered a positive performance culture and provided valuable opportunities for athletes to learn and improve.
The pathway has also benefited from the introduction of specialist sport psychology support and a greater emphasis on athlete monitoring and data collection. Together, these improvements are helping coaches and support staff better understand athlete needs, tailor support and make more informed decisions around development.
The impact is already beginning to show. Across the pathway, there is increased depth within squads, greater competition for selection and continued improvement in athlete performances at international level.
Bowls Scotland has secured additional dedicated investment from sportscotland to support the continued growth of the Performance Pathway. This funding recognises the significant progress made since the introduction of the Podium Pathway and our commitment to building a sustainable and progressive performance system for the future.
As part of this next phase, Bowls Scotland will establish a network of Performance Centres, providing athletes with more regular access to high-quality coaching, training and support closer to home. These centres will complement national programme activity and create a more connected, year-round development environment, helping athletes and coaches engage more consistently throughout the season.
"We're incredibly excited about what this investment means for the future of our pathway. It gives us the opportunity to provide more consistent support for both athletes and coaches, strengthen our development environments and ensure talented people across Scotland have access to the opportunities they need to progress and succeed." Kareena Cuthbert, Head of Performance
To support this growth, applications are now open for a new Performance Pathway Coordinator, a key role that will help coordinate the planning, administration, communications and operational delivery of the programme.
Additional coaching opportunities will also be advertised in the coming months as we continue to expand the team supporting Scotland's current and future international athletes.
The progress made since 2024 has created strong foundations. With increased investment, new Performance Centres and an expanding support team, the next chapter of Scotland's Performance Pathway promises to be an exciting one.
