Atlantic International Challenge - Day Two Report

Scotland enjoyed a hat-trick of victories at the Atlantic International Challenge, which sees them boast top spot in the men’s, women’s and overall standings after day two.

Session Four

Scotland made a promising start to day two by securing a hard fought 7-4 victory against Canada in the first session of the day.

Mark Kelsey and Connor Milne had to settle for a draw in their men’s pairs encounter against Jon MacDonald and Cameron Lefresne. The Scots held a 10-6 advantage with only two ends remaining but unfortunately dropped counts of 3 and 1 to see the match finish in a 10-10 draw.

Daniel Gormley, Jason Banks and Gary Prunty flew out of the traps on day two to defeat Mike McNorton, Rob Law and Kody Olthof. Scotland’s men’s triple raced into a 12-2 lead after five ends and managed to maintain this advantage to come away with a 17-8 win.

In the women’s pairs, Dawn Anderson and Beth Riva lost out to Canada’s Linda Ng and Jordan Kos. A slow start for the Scottish duo saw them trailing 2-11 after nine ends. Dawn and Beth did begin to stage a fight back but eventually ran out of ends and came up short in a 9-12 defeat.

The first session of day two was dominated by our women’s triples team of Dee Hoggan, Rebecca Houston and Lynn Lees as they got the better of Joanne Cooper, Baylee Van Steiyn and Emma Boyd. The Scottish trio all hit the ground running and defeated their opponents 21-1 after an excellent display of consistent drawing bowls.

Session Five

Scotland continued their winning form in today’s second session as they claimed a crucial 7-4 win over Ireland.

In the men’s pairs, Mark Kelsey and Connor Milne produced yet another draw against the strong Irish pairing of Stuart Bennett and Ian McClure. The Scottish duo trailed 4-8 after eight ends but were certainly not to going to lie down. Fighting their way back into the contest, Mark and Connor found themselves only one shot behind going into the last end and held their nerve to score a single shot to secure a 10-10 draw.

Daniel Gormley, Jason Banks and Gary Prunty notched up their second win of the day against Mark Foster, Stephen Kirkwood and Adam Rankin. Scotland’s men’s triple once again got the better of the early exchanges and led 9-4 after seven ends. The Irish team managed to score the next four ends in a row to level the match at 9-9 with 11 ends played. Daniel, Jason and Gary moved up a gear in the final two ends to claim a 14-9 victory.

Our women’s pair of Dawn Anderson and Beth Riva suffered their second defeat of day two at the hands of Ireland’s Zoe Stratton and Sandra Baillie MBE. Scotland struggled to get a foot hold in the game and ended up trailing their opponents 4-9 after nine ends. Managing to score on the final two ends, Dawn and Beth eventually lost out 7-11.

Dee Hoggan, Rebecca Houston and Lynn Lees recorded back-to-back victories as they overcame Hannah Cochrane, Zoe Minish and Sophie McIntyre in the women’s triples. The Scottish trio powered into a 10-2 lead after seven ends and managed the game well to finish with a 12-9 triumph.

Session Six

Scotland signed off day two of the Atlantic International Challenge unbeaten across all four disciplines to chalk up a 10-1 victory against USA.

Mark Kelsey and Connor Milne ensured they were unbeaten in all three of their pairs contests throughout the day as they got the better of Daniel McGorelick and Scottie Marzonie. Dominating from the off, Mark and Connor were in top form to put themselves 18-4 ahead after 10 ends, eventually winning 22-9.

Our men’s triples team of Daniel Gormley, Jason Banks and Gary Prunty also finished day two undefeated courtesy of a draw against USA’s Corey Vose, Bill Brautt and Bob Schneider. The Scots struggled for consistency and only managed to score on four of the 13 ends played. Despite this, they found themselves with a 13-10 advantage going into the last end but unfortunately dropped 3 shots to finish all square 13-13.

Not to be disheartened by their earlier defeats, Dawn Anderson and Beth Riva showed brilliant character to overcome Martha Nilsen and Dee McSparran in the women’s pairs. On this occasion it was the Scottish pairing that started well, holding a 7-2 advantage after seven ends. Dawn and Beth kept their foot on the gas until the very last end to win 18-4.

Dee Hoggan, Rebecca Houston and Lynn Lees completed the perfect day when they got the better of Joan Robbins, Joanne Hedgepath and Sandy Wall. Making yet another strong start, the Scots found themselves 7-0 ahead after only four ends. There was no let up either as Scotland continued to dominate proceedings and clinched an 18-4 victory.
