Atlantic International Challenge - Day Four Report
Following two defeats and one win, Scotland have dropped to second place in the overall standings at the Atlantic International Challenge, four points behind leaders Ireland going into tomorrow’s final day.
Session 10
Scotland suffered a 3-9 defeat at the hands of Ireland in today’s first session of play.
In the men’s pairs, Mark Kelsey and Connor Milne narrowly lost out to Stuart Bennett and Ian McClure. The Scottish duo trailed 2-6 after seven ends and despite winning four of the remaining six ends lost out 7-8 at the conclusion of the match. Both teams delivered an extremely high quality contest with no more than two shots being scored by either side throughout the 13 ends.
Daniel Gormley, Jason Banks and Gary Prunty secured Scotland’s only victory of the first session as they got the better of Mark Foster, Stephen Kirkwood and Adam Rankin. Scotland’s men’s triple found themselves all square at 5-5 after six ends but finished strongly in the later stages to clinch an 15-8 victory.
Beth Riva and Dawn Anderson also came up short in the women’s pairs against Ireland’s Zoe Stratton and Sandra Baillie MBE. Scotland’s pairing got the better of the opening exchanges and held a 6-4 advantage after six ends. Unfortunately, the second half of the game slipped away from Dawn and Beth as they lost out 9-16.
Our women’s triples team of Dee Hoggan, Rebecca Houston and Lynn Lees were defeated by Hannah Cochrane, Zoe Minish and Sophie McIntyre. The Scottish trio made a slow start to proceedings and found themselves 0-6 behind after four ends. However, the Scots responded well and fought their way back to hold an 8-6 lead after nine ends. Momentum then shifted in Ireland’s favour as they won the next three ends and eventually claimed a 13-9 triumph.

The Scottish trio struggled to get a foothold in the contest and were trailing 1-6 after five ends. Although Daniel, Jason and Gary staged a late fightback to lead 8-7 after 11 ends they couldn’t convert their advantage into a win and lost out 8-10.
Dee Hoggan and Beth Riva contested their first match in the women’s pairs together and overcame USA’s Martha Nilsen and Dee McSparran. The Scottish pairing were in fine form from the off and quickly found themselves 10-2 ahead after five ends. Daniel Gormley, Jason Banks and Gary Prunty suffered their second defeat of the day at the hands of Mike McNorton, Rob Law and Kody Olthof. Scotland never really going and trailed 0-15 after seven ends after some great play by the Canadians. Unfortunately for the Scots, the deficit was too big to overturn and they lost out 5-20.
In the women’s pairs, Dee Hoggan and Beth Riva lost out to Canada’s Linda Ng and Jordan Kos. The Scots failed to get the better of the early exchanges and fell 2-9 behind after six ends. Despite mounting a late comeback, Dee and Beth eventually ran out of ends and had to settle for a 9-11 defeat.
Dawn Anderson, Rebecca Houston and Lynn Lees completed a disappointing session for Scotland as they were beaten by Joanne Cooper, Baylee Van Steijn and Emma Boyd. There was barely anything to separate the two sides for the entire match, but the Scottish side could just never seem to shake off their opponents.
