2025 World Cup - Day Two Report

Hats off to Jason Banks & Paul Foster MBE and Pauline Wilson & Garry Brown who have advanced to the final of the men’s pairs and para mixed pairs respectively at the World Cup in Malaysia. Both finals will take place on Saturday 8th November with the Scottish contingent in the hunt to bring home more gold medals on the world stage.

In the men’s pairs, Jason and Paul continued their 100% winning record, chalking up wins against Hong Kong China’s James Po and Ka Ho Lee and the Australian duo of Corey Wedlock and Aaron Teys to finish top of section 2. Advancing to the semi finals, the Scottish pairing now faced the young Irish combination of Ryan McElroy and Adam McKeown. Following a nail-biting encounter, it was the Scottish duo who prevailed victorious 5-2, 2-5 & 1-0.

Having won two of their three group matches yesterday, Pauline Wilson and Garry Brown went into today’s sectional games knowing they required a further two wins from their two remaining fixtures, and that’s exactly what Scotland’s para mixed pairs team achieved. The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallists delivered two accomplished performances to defeat both India and Canada in straight sets and book their place in the knockout stages. Pauline and Garry took on the English pairing of Sally-Ann Lewis-Wall and John Greaves in their semi final, with the Scots maintaining their impressive form to secure a 6-3 & 6-3 triumph.

Following the completion of the group phase, both Caroline Brown and Sophie McGrouther bowed out of the women’s singles. Caroline picked up a hard-fought 2-1 victory over New Zealand’s Katelyn Inch before losing out in a tie break to Katherine Rednall from England in her final sectional game. Meanwhile, Sophie battled well in her two remaining group matches but narrowly came up short against both Selina Goddard and Emily Kernick on tie breaks. Both Sophie and Caroline’s attention will now turn to the women’s pairs event getting underway tomorrow where they have crucial matches against Ireland, USA and England respectively.

Play wasn’t quite complete yet for day two as Pauline Wilson returned to action in her opening group game in the para women’s singles. The Scot got her campaign off to the perfect start with a straight sets win against Sue Jones from Wales. Pauline still has four sectional games remaining and can look forward to taking on New Zealand’s Teri Blackbourn and Linda Walsh of Ireland tomorrow.
