GC 2018 Day One

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games began in earnest on Thursday, with several of the sports' competitions kicking off, including lawn bowls.

The Team Scotland lawn bowlers recorded six wins from seven ties across the day.

In the morning session, Caroline Brown beat Rachel MacDonald of Jersey 21-13 in the women's singles; and Ronnie Duncan, Derek Oliver and Darren Burnett beat the Cook Islands 27-11 in the men's triples. Both were preliminary rounds.

In the afternoon session, Alex Marshall and Paul Foster beat Niue 41-11 in the men's pairs; Lesley Doig, Stacey McDougall, Kay Moran and Claire Johnston also beat Niue 44-1 in the women's fours; and Irene Edgar and Robert Barr, with directors David Thomas and Sarah Jane Ewing, beat England 16-6 in the B2/B3 mixed pairs. Again, these were preliminary rounds.

In the evening, the women's fours were back in action in round two, and beat Canada 21-7. It was a tough opener for Michael Simpson, Michael Nicoll and Garry Brown, who were beaten 18-6 by Australia in the preliminary round of the B6/B7/B8 open triples.
