Strong opening day for Scotland at British Bowls

Scotland enjoyed a busy and successful opening day at the National Centre for Bowling, Ayr, as the British Bowls Championships and Para British Bowls Internationals got underway.

Across the British Bowls Championships, Scotland produced a number of strong performances to book places in Wednesday’s finals across several disciplines.

In the Women’s Singles, Emma MacLeod made an impressive start with a commanding 21-5 victory over England’s Stef Branfield, before narrowly missing out on a place in the final after a 21-20 defeat to Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill.

Iain McLean kept Scotland’s hopes alive in the Men’s Singles, edging past Wales’ Connor Murphy 21-19 to reach Wednesday’s final.

There was further success in the Women’s Pairs, as Lyn Houston and Rebecca Houston defeated Wales 18-14 to set up a final against England.

Scotland also progressed in the Men’s Triples, with Peter Thomson, Andy Furye and Darren Burnett coming through a tight semi-final against Ireland, winning 14-13 to book their place in the final.

Both Scotland Fours teams will contest finals on Wednesday. Abbi Orderley, Christine McCrimmond, Ina Todd and Pam Murchie defeated Ireland 13-12 in the Women’s Fours, while John Reid Jnr, Robbie Cuthill, Stewart McAlees and John Fleming secured a 20-13 win over Wales in the Men’s Fours.

In the Over 55 Fours, Scotland’s men’s team of George Sharp, Pat Kinhart, Ranald McDonald and David Smeaton enjoyed an excellent day, defeating England 22-7 before beating Wales 21-18 to reach the final against Ireland. Scotland’s Women’s Over 55 Fours team were edged out by Jersey in a close semi-final, losing 14-12.

There was also plenty to celebrate in the youth events. Jacek Goldie defeated Ireland’s Dillon McElroy 21-16 to reach the Men’s U18 Singles final, while Jack Davidson booked his place in the Men’s U25 Singles final with a 21-17 win over Ireland’s Jayden Kyle.

There were also encouraging performances from Scotland’s young players across the singles competitions. Kasey Nelson pushed England’s Grace Read in the Women’s U18 Singles before losing out 21-17, while Jessica Young was edged out by Wales’ Jasmine Stanton in the Women’s U25 Singles, 21-15.

Scotland will also be represented in both U25 Pairs finals, with Megan Sproat and Rachel Pirie defeating Wales 18-13 in the Women’s U25 Pairs, while Kieran Dodds and Danny Stevenson beat Ireland 17-14 in the Men’s U25 Pairs.

In the Para British Bowls Internationals, Scotland made an impressive start with a 10-2 victory over Ireland in the opening session, winning five of the six rinks.

The second session saw Scotland share the points with England in a 6-6 draw, before Wales took the final session of the day 9-3.

After three sessions, England lead the Para British Bowls Internationals standings on 28 points, with Scotland second on 19, Wales third on 15 and Ireland fourth on 10.
