Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week – Maree Todd attends Scotland v Australia Test

Yesterday, as part of Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week, we were delighted to welcome the Scottish Government Minister for Social Care, Wellbeing and Sport, Maree Todd MSP to visit our Australia Test Match at Glasgow Indoor Bowling Club.

Maree was hosted by Bowls Scotland CEO, Malcolm Dingwall-Smith and Head of High Performance, Kareena Cuthbert and took time to meet with a group of female players, coaches and staff. She heard about the leadership roles in the sport from coaches and discovered how Bowls Scotland are supporting the development of female bowlers, including towards next years’ Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The players from our women’s and para’s squads discussed with Maree how they got involved in bowls, their experiences and why they love the sport.

Of course, Maree was also able to watch some of the ladies’ singles matches taking place on the green during her visit and then had a go herself, with some pointers from Natalie McWilliams.

Reflecting on the visit, Bowls Scotland CEO Malcolm Dingwall-Smith said:

“Bowls Scotland’s female membership is among the highest of any sport in Scotland. We want to use Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week to showcase our female players and coaches and to encourage more women and girls to take up bowls. Having the Minister for Sport was a great opportunity to dispel some of the myths about bowls, showcase a modern and progressive sport, and encourage more support for our game.”
