Recruiting: Non-Executive Directors (Voluntary)

This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of one of Scotland’s largest and most successful sports.

With 42 medals including an incredible 21 golds, we are one of Scotland’s most successful Commonwealth sports. When the Commonwealth Games returns to Glasgow later this year, some of our medal winning bowlers from previous Games will be joined by a new generation of Scottish bowlers aiming to become national heroes.

Our vision is about far more than just medals. Our 800 bowls clubs are at the heart of communities in cities, towns and villages throughout Scotland. With over 48,000 members, we are the ultimate sport for all whatever your age, gender, or ability. We know that bowls plays an important role in the lives of our members and that we can make a positive impact on the physical and mental health of the nation.

Joining our Board means playing your own vital part in this story. You will be joining a tightknit team that works together to achieve success and who know that the skills and experience you can bring to the table will help us to get where we want to go. We are an ambitious organisation that believes we can deliver:

  • Strong and sustainable clubs
  • The best performing bowls nation in the world
  • A modern and progressive sport
  • A diverse and accessible sport

This is an exciting time for our sport. We have recently started the process of developing our new strategy to take us to 2031 and beyond. We want our new board members to play an active part in the process that will help share the future of lawn bowls in Scotland. With a team of 17 skilled staff and countless more volunteers delivering our activity, our Directors play a governance and strategic role, stepping back from the day-to-day operations to see the bigger picture and steering the overall direction of the organisation.

We are seeking 3 to 4 committed individuals to join and strengthen our Board of Directors. We are particularly keen to add these skills to our Board:

  • Income generation (e.g. sponsorship, fundraising)
  • Marketing, branding and communications
  • Digital transformation to support internal operations and external engagement and membership services
  • Legal

We don’t have an image of the perfect Board member and welcome interest from anyone who believes they could be an asset to our organisation. We expect to add a mixture of bowlers and non-bowlers to the Board. Bowls Scotland is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive organisation that reflects the clubs and communities we serve. Applications for this position from individuals from underrepresented groups in bowls and our Board are highly encouraged. This includes but is not limited to women, individuals with disabilities, and those living outside Scotland’s Central Belt.

This is a voluntary role. It is anticipated that attendance will be required at four online Board meetings and two in-person Board away days per year, as well as regular communication between meetings, and opportunities for additional responsibilities agreed with the Board.
