Donna and David's double triples joy

The National Championships is always special, but for Donna and David Comrie, the 2018 Championships was an occasion never to be forgotten.

The married couple returned home as national champions, winning the ladies' and gents' triples titles, Donna with Leven and David with Markinch, in what is thought to be the first time in recent memory that a wife and husband have claimed national trophies in the same discipline whilst playing for different clubs.

David started bowling 32 years ago and Donna took it up when they got married. They played at the same club until Donna moved to Leven BC to play alongside her East Fife Indoor BC club-mates Lynn Stein and Julie Sword, with whom she won the National Championships triples for Leven on Saturday.

Bowls is a family affair for the Comries, with David's father Malcolm as lead in Markinch's triumph in the triples on Saturday, and Jamie Cameron completing the team. Son Euan represented Leven in last month's SYBA Championships.

Is there a rivalry between the two clubs?

"There is only a friendly rivalry," says David. "Mostly friendly."

Donna agrees. "We have played with each other and against each other in open and invitational tournaments but it is always with a friendly rivalry."

After their wins at the National Centre, everyone celebrated together, and Markinch invited both teams to the club when they got back home on Sunday, with Leven planning to return the invitation soon.
