Change Waste Recycling and Bowls Scotland divert all waste from landfill during 2023 National Championships

As part of our commitment to sustainability, Bowls Scotland are delighted to share the results of our National Championships Recycling and Carbon Savings Report, made possible through our partnership with Change Waste Recycling. Over the week-long championships at the National Centre for Bowling, Ayr in July over 2,173 kg of Carbon was saved through recycling, which is the equivalent of watching TV consistently for 21 years!

Over 8,400 kgs of waste was generated by our flagship event. This comprised of general waste, mixed recycling, glass, cardboard, and food waste. Thanks to support from Change Waste Recycling a waste management system was put in place on site to collect and separate all waste.

Change Waste Recycling were able to ensure proper handling and responsible disposal of all waste generated by the event, with a staggering 100% of waste being diverted from landfill. As part of our long-term decarbonisation plan, Bowls Scotland will continue to find ways to reduce the impact of our events and align our actions with our commitment to sustainability. We are delighted to be able to work alongside our partners on a project like this and will use this 2023 report as a benchmark for further improvements in the future.

Following the event, Bowls Scotland’s Competition and Events Manager, Lawra Cox said:

“It was great to work in collaboration with our partners Changewaste Recycling at this years’ National Championships to reduce waste and increase recycling across the site. Working together we were able to gain a better understanding of the waste created by our largest annual event and can now set targets to reduce this waste to create a more environmentally friendly National Championships year on year. Changewaste helped with waste collection at the back of house as well as in customer facing areas, providing clear and simple instructions to allow players and spectators to help separate waste, keeping the site tidier for everyone to enjoy. We are really pleased to have no waste heading to landfill from the 2023 event and with the carbon savings we have made in this first year working with Changewaste and hope to improve on this for events in the future.”

Tom Rattray, Head of Corporate Accounts at Change Waste Recycling Said:

"Change Waste Recycling are proud to have partnered with Bowls Scotland to provide waste management services at The National Championships in July 2023. Together, we have demonstrated that through collaboration and conscious waste management, we can not only reduce waste but also deliver a greener, more environmentally friendly event. We were pleased to report on the carbon savings achieved through recycling and the fact that all waste was diverted from landfill. We look forward to building on the success of the event in the coming years and continuing to have a positive impact on the environment”.
