Dorothy Freeburn Obituary

It is with great sadness that we inform the bowls community that Dorothy Freeburn, Bowls Scotland Ladies President in 2013, has passed away after a short illness at Kilbryde Hospice in East Kilbride.

Dorothy was a member of Raploch Bowling Club for 25 years before moving to Larkhall where she has been a member for the past nine years, she was also a member of Lanarkshire Indoor Bowling Club.

She became District Secretary in 1999 in the then Scottish Women’s Bowling Association and served her district for 14 years until she became Lady President of Bowls Scotland in 2013.

After standing down as a District Secretary, Dorothy still attended the National Championships and was a great supporter of bowls in Scotland.

Her love of the sport has taken her all over the UK for the Home Internationals and even the world to major events. She travelled to Melbourne in 2006 for the Commonwealth Games where she watched Alex Marshall MBE & Paul Foster MBE win gold in the Men’s Pairs and Joyce Lindores & Kay Moran winning silver in the Women’s Pairs. In 2008, she travelled to Christchurch to watch the World Bowls Championships and in 2011 she travelled to Hong Kong for the Hong Kong classic.

Dorothy was a larger than life character who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Alison and son Scott, she also has three grandchildren Graeme, Kyle and Lindsay.
