Equity PDF Print E-mail
Equity is fundamental to Bowls Scotland and is taken into consideration in all aspects of our operations. Bowls Scotland is fully committed to providing all communities throughout the country with the opportunity to take part in our sport.

Equity in sport is concerned with fairness, justice, inclusion and respect. It ensures that individuals or groups are not discriminated against for reasons such as:
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex or sexual orientation.

Bowls provides an opportunity to bring people together through sport as it is inclusive and provides accessibility to all sections of the community. Bowls Scotland will work with our member clubs to ensure:

  • Everyone who wants to play bowls has the opportunity to participate
  • Inequalities are identified and addressed
  • Barriers preventing participation are removed
  • Clubs are aware of the legal requirements for Equality
  • Templates are provided for clubs to create their own Equity Policies and action plans.

The Equity Standard: A Framework for Sport

Bowls Scotland is currently working towards achieving the foundation level of the Equity Standard: A Framework for Sport.

Applying the standard enables our organisation to:

  • Provide a framework for achieving equity in sport
  • Ensure democracy and the sound governance of the sport
  • Increase the number of participants, members, coaches, officials, spectators and volunteers by reaching new audiences
  • Help meet legal duties thereby reducing the likelihood of litigation
  • Enhance the skills and knowledge base of our staff and volunteers
  • Increase active involvement in equity at every level of Bowls Scotland
  • Improve equity practices through monitoring, evaluation and review methods
  • Improve our chances of accessing funding and sponsorship.

As well as meeting our requirements for Equity this survey is also extremely important in gathering up-to-date profile information on bowls in Scotland. This information will help to shape the future direction of our development work.

Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 provides a new cross-cutting legislative framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all, to update, simplify and strengthen the previous legislation and to deliver a simple, modern and accessible framework of discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society.

Implementation of the majority of the Equality Act began on 1 October 2010. There is a series of ‘Quick Start’ guides setting out clearly what the new laws will mean for business, the public sector, the voluntary sector and the public, helping you to understand the new rights and responsibilities and what the changes mean for your club. (www.equalities.gov.uk)

Bowls Scotland have produced a guidance document for our clubs to help them understand the implications of the Act. To access the guidance please click here.
