From Friday 6 May 2011 for the first time ever Bowls Scotland will be launching a national Club Membership Drive.
The aim of the new initiative is to support those who endeavour to get marketing activity and events organised throughout the season to drive up membership in your clubs. The success of this campaign relies on clubs getting involved and we would urge as many of you as possible to take part to promote your own club and our sport.
The launch of the campaign in early May is to enable all clubs all over the country to take full advantage of the outdoor season. We would be delighted to hear from you and your plans for promotional activity at your club so please complete and return the club sign-up form below. We will then highlight your activity on the Bowls Scotland website to help those who want to find out more information on what is happening in their area.

Marketing and promotion Your events in the diary, the members are enthused so now is the time to promote your event. Think about all the opportunities to promote your event locally and take advantage of them to ensure you make the event a success. The following are some ideas for maximising exposure:
- Use your members – make sure all your members are aware of the event and give them information to pass onto friends, family and work colleagues;
- Local businesses – pass your posters and flyers around local businesses and try and get them involved in the event. As well as increasing participation you might also find some interested sponsors;
- Local media – make the most of your local newspapers, magazines and radio stations to promote your event to the community. Invite the journalists along for a game and give them the opportunity to experience bowls for themselves. It might even lead to some increased publicity locally;
- Partnership working – bringing a partner on board for your event might help to reduce the workload, increase the exposure and ultimately increase the participation. You might choose to work in partnership with another bowling club, another sports club, the council or your local sports centre;
- Active Schools – all local schools should have an Active Schools Coordinator linked to them. They provide links between school sport and club sport so are excellent contacts to have if you’re running an event that involves juniors. Not only will you increase your junior membership but it’s also a great way of attracting parents;
- Viral e-mail – send information on your event to members via e-mail. Ask them to send it to any friends and family who might be interested. They will hopefully in turn send it to their friends and family. Simple, cheap and effective!
- Door drops – get together a group of members and give them a list of streets to target. Post the flyers through the doors and see what response you get. Remember, people won’t necessarily know your clubs there and even if they do they might never have had the confidence or the opportunity to come along. Make it easy for them.

Data collection Now that you’ve done the hard part and attracted the participants to the club you need to do everything you can to ensure they have a good experience and come back again. Key to this is ensuring that you know who they are and have a way of contacting them again in future.
The following download is a simple data collection form that you can use to record the details of the participants at your event. You might even encourage them to complete the form by holding a competition.
